Wind Waker HD Remake for Wii U Announced

Posted on January 23, 2013 by Elias Thompson

WiiU_ZeldaWindWaker_Scrn09Hot on the heels of announcing our own “Wind Waker Month,” earlier this morning Nintendo broadcasted a global Nintendo Direct announcing many new features and updates for the Wii U. And games. Among the games announced, two stood out us: confirmation of a new Zelda Wii U in development, and a remake in glorious high definition of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Little information is known at this point, but Eiji Aonuma, the current producer of the Zelda series, mentions that the idea first spawned after they experimented with upgrading the Twilight Princess style of graphics for the Wii U tech demo at E3 2011, and so they tried upgrading the graphics style of Wind Waker. He went on to say that, since it will be some time before the new Zelda Wii U title is ready for release, as it is still in the early stage of development, he hopes that this game will help tide over Zelda fans until it can be released.

We at Zelda Eternity are pretty excited for this and will continue to bring you the very latest on any developments regarding this newest announcement. We have uploaded the segment from Nintendo Direct, which can be viewed below. We have also compiled all of the official screenshots in all of their HD glory, which can be viewed by going to our Wind Waker section or by clicking here. Stay tuned!

This is wonderful news! I literally jumped for joy once I heard of its announcement! I do wonder what will happen to a potential Majora's Mask remake though.

I wouldn't mind seeing this art style in the next brand new Zelda game. Whatever style Nintendo chooses, I'm sure it will be a good one. :-)

These images are beautiful, but… they're not Cel-shaded. Why aren't they Cel-shaded?!? That was one of The Wind Waker's defining aspects, and it's… gone. ='(
